Recent national discussions surrounding election policy, including the March 31 executive order on citizenship verification and mail-in voting, have generated understandable questions among voters. In New Mexico, however, it is important to separate national rhetoric from the realities on the ground.
New Mexico’s elections are consistently recognized as among the most transparent and well-administered in the country. Established processes for absentee and early voting are clear, accessible and built with multiple layers of accountability. These systems are designed not only to ensure access, but to maintain the integrity and confidence that voters deserve.
Changes to election procedures, especially those introduced close to an election cycle, can create confusion for voters and administrators alike. Clarity and consistency are essential. When uncertainty is introduced, even unintentionally, it risks undermining participation by making voters question what to expect or whether their vote will count.
Observe New Mexico Elections (ONME) was established as a fact-based, nonpartisan election observation effort that is rooted in constitutional reality. Through trained, impartial observers, we document election processes during both the primary and general elections. Our public findings are based solely on direct observation and are shared transparently on observenmelections.org.
To date, those observations reinforce what many New Mexicans already experience: an election system that is accessible, well-managed and continuously improving. There is no credible evidence suggesting widespread irregularities in our state’s voting processes, including absentee voting.
As conversations continue at the national level, New Mexico voters should remain confident in their local systems. We encourage voters to seek out accurate, New Mexico–specific information, ask questions and participate fully in upcoming elections.
New Mexicans can trust the election systems and processes already in place. The facts support it, the processes reinforce it, and our work will continue to document the realities on the ground.
